Berlin, London and Paris

Just returned from a working trip to Berlin, London and Paris. I did, however, manage to get out a few days to make images. Three of these images are in this post.

On the last day in Berlin I paid a visit to the Jewish Memorial – some would say it was too cloudy and wet, but for me it set the perfect tone for the image.

Took a walk one morning with my friend Dougie and caught this image of British Parliament and Big Ben…it was perfect light for Black and White imagery

Made it to the Louvre my last day in Paris….a bit cloudy but once again good light for Black and White. This was the first time I made images at The Louvre – no tourists yet – too early….

The Mint, Los Angeles

On Saturday I was invited to photograph at a small Los Angeles Nightclub, The Mint. The Mint dates back to 1937 and many acts played/broke from this club. Artists such as Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Ray Charles, Ben Harper and Bonnie Rait. The club has great a great vibe and the sound excellent. On Saturday I heard three New Orleans artists over two shows.

Jon Cleary - The Mint

Jon Cleary – The Mint

Jon Cleary was on first. He is actually from Kent in England and now lives in NOLA studying ‘the musical culture and life in NOLA’. Jon has performed with Bonnie Rait, Taj Mahal, BB King and Eric Burdon. His band is called Jon Cleary and The absolute Monster Gentlemen with Cornell Williams on bass, Eddie Christmas on drums, and my favorite, Darnell ‘Big D’ Perkins on guitar.

Next was The Tin Men, a combination of sousaphone (Matt Perrine), washboard (Washboard Chaz) and guitar (Alex Murray). The Tin Men have been called ‘one of the most interesting bands to emerge from New Orleans in years’. They certainly lived up to that….

Closing out the show was Paul Sanchez and The Rolling Road Review featuring Arsene Delay and Antoine Diel . Paul is New Orleans born and was one of the founding members and primary songwriters of Cowboy Mouth. Paul is a prolific writer with songs covered by Darius Rucker, Irma Thomas.

Jon Batiste – McKittrick Hotel

A few images form the Jon Batiste show at the McKittrick Hotel in New York City. Great show, great venue. The show was filmed by Front and Center Entertainment for a future airing on PBS.

Bon Jovi-J Geils, Met Life Stadium

Went to Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey last Thursday and saw Bon Jovi and The JGeils Band. Below are a few images.

Added some images from the July 6th Rolling Stones-Hyde Park shows to my website:

‘My portraits are more about me then they are about the people I photograph’….Richard Avedon

Recently I have been photographing a fair amount of shows in rather small venues. Arriving in time for sound check has become my pattern as many of the images I like are made before the audience arrives. You are able to freely move about the venue without blocking anyone’s view and the artists are more prone to give me a bit more of what I am after in a music image – direct eye contact!

Below is a gallery of some recent images – environmental portraits made at sound check or after the show.
